Corporate Rowing

Black Mountain Rowing Club offers each year, around October, eight-oared rowing to participating organisations. Corporate rowing:

  • develops teamwork;

  • builds shared commitment and reinforces the need for mutual obligation;

  • involves experiential learning, which is viewed as far more effective in changing behaviour than
    seminar based learning;

  • may improve retention of participants in Canberra through enhanced awareness of
    Canberra's assets in particular the Lake and its surrounds, for recreational
    purposes; and

  • helps participants acquire new recreational skill contributing to a healthy work life balance.

For the participants, the program provides a unique and fun experience, as well as a genuine learning opportunity and, possibly, a lifelong pursuit in recreational or competitive rowing.

Timing - 2011

There will be three sessions a week for four weeks running from 24 October to 21 November 2011. They will start at 6 am. Participants will be on the water for up to one and half hours. The objective is to have the boat back in the shed and participants gone by 8 am. There will also be an introductory session and involvement in a regatta either against other corporate crews or other handicapped Club crews.

What does it involve?

A minimum crew of 10 is required but we would recommend 12 given work pressures, absences from Canberra and sickness.

The Black Mountain Rowing Club will provide:

  • a coach;

  • reserve rowers;

  • coxswain if a suitable person is not availabe from the partiicpating organisation;

  • an Eight and tinnie

  • video and photography;

  • certificates; and

  • breakfast for the introductory session and lunch for the regatta.

A Club member can also meet with the Training and Development Sections of organisations on how they might make effective use of the program within their own training strategies.

What does it cost?

The cost for the crew of 8 for the 4 weeks, along with the regatta and certificates, is $4,000.
